Open Source Design Opportunity for Students at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC)

A team of six students, with sponsorship from an industry partner, will design and build small clusters, learn scientific applications, and apply optimization techniques for their chosen architectures. Participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience and knowledge in open source research computing, form valuable relationships with leaders in academia and industry, and attend prominent conferences.

Libraries Celebrates the Year of Open Science

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) declared 2023 the Year of Open Science, featuring actions across the federal government to advance national open science policy, provide access to the results of the nation’s taxpayer-supported research, accelerate discovery and innovation, promote public trust, and drive more equitable outcomes. This fall, the University Libraries has brought members of the CMU community together to discuss these topics and more in a series of open science-focused events.

Film Highlights CMU Leadership in Open Source and Climate Research

A new short documentary film airing during the COP28 climate summit highlights Carnegie Mellon’s leadership in environmental research and education and the role of open source software to amplify the impact of these efforts.

Biomedical Hackathon Highlighted in “Technical.ly”

On October 24, tech news media company Technical.ly highlighted the biomedical hackathon hosted by the University Libraries and cloud computing and bioinformatics company DNAnexus. The piece explores the collaborative nature of the event, which focused on creating open-source pipelines, and the way the Pittsburgh community came together to facilitate learning and networking.

5 Years of KiltHub

Carnegie Mellon University’s institutional repository, Kilthub, was launched in July 2018. It replaced and improved upon the previous research repository, Research Showcase@CMU, which had been active for ten years. All content from Research Showcase was migrated into the KiltHub system, preserving metadata and usage statistics.

Open Access Week 2023

Providing Open Access to research and scholarship has become a worldwide movement serving the mission of higher education, and it is strategic for CMU. Open Access disseminates works authored by the Carnegie Mellon community as broadly as possible, encouraging use, increasing citations, and amplifying impact, and enables the CMU community to access works authored around the world.

IMLS Grant Will Support Open Science Training

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded a grant of $241,147 to a team from CMU Libraries to support the implementation of a training program and curriculum to prepare library practitioners to meet the evolving open science needs and expectations of the research communities they support.
