CMU to Host Challenge to Put Scientific Data to Work With AI

Through the Open Forum for AI (OFAI), founded by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and led by University Libraries Associate Dean Sayeed Choudhury, the university is helping launch the ProtoStar Challenge in collaboration with Hugging Face and other partners. The initiative reflects the Libraries' commitment to advancing open science and building the infrastructure that makes scientific knowledge more accessible and usable.

The following is an excerpt from a story published by Carnegie Mellon University.

Making scientific research publicly available is only the first step toward turning knowledge into real-world impact. At Carnegie Mellon University, expertise in artificial intelligence and longstanding leadership in open science are helping researchers address barriers that can prevent scientific data from being used more broadly.

CMU will host the inaugural ProtoStar Challenge, a new initiative that brings together Hugging Face, a platform for developing and sharing AI models and datasets, and universities participating through OFAI.

The challenge tackles a persistent obstacle in science: datasets may be fragmented across systems, stored in incompatible formats or lack the documentation needed for researchers and AI tools to work with them effectively.
