At Carnegie Mellon University Libraries, we celebrate the many contributions of the faculty and staff who make the Libraries the destination for scholarly information, creative inquiry, and intellectual collaboration across disciplines, propelling the significance, reach, and impact of the university.

Associate Dean for Research and Innovation Brian Mathews recently published an article in portal: Libraries and the Academy. It uses the metaphor of the Cambrian Explosion to explore the current and emerging future of libraries. The essay is packed with frameworks, metaphors, and interdisciplinary weaving.

Mathews and Organizational Development Manager Kelly Woessner presented at the recent Generative AI in Libraries (GAIL) Virtual Conference about the AI Sandbox, a monthly meeting where Libraries employees explore and play around with various AI tools and resources through demos, hands-on practice, and group discussion. Their talk was titled “AI Sandbox: Cultivating AI Fluencies Through Inclusive Exploration.”

Mathews, Library AI Infrastructure Resident Dom Jebbia, and Project Management Office Director Ken Rose also presented at the recent GAIL Virtual Conference, about Jebbia’s first year as Library AI Infrastructure Resident.

Senior Communications Coordinator Sarah Elizabeth Bender received an Award of Excellence from the Communicator Awards for her profile “Through Space, A Story.” The piece highlights the design expertise and projects of Associate Director of Creative Heidi Wiren Kébé.

Associate Dean for Academic Engagement Nicky Agate was one of two US representatives elected to the Academic and Research Libraries section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

STEM Librarian Haoyong Lan was elected to the Artificial Intelligence Special Interest Group of the IFLA.

STEM Librarian and Director of the Open Science Program Melanie Gainey has been appointed Chair of the PsyArXiv Member Advisory Board for a two year term. The PsyArXiv MAB is an international group of librarians and researchers who advise The Society for Improvement of Psychological Science (SIPS) on issues related to management and development of PsyArXiv, the premier preprint server for psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

Associate Dean for Digital Infrastructure Sayeed Choudhury was recently named a Carnegie Mellon Scott Institute for Energy Innovation faculty affiliate. An affiliation allows a CMU faculty member with energy-related research, education, and/or outreach activities to be associated with the Scott Institute. Affiliation with the Scott Institute allows access to submit proposals for and requests for inclusion in seed funding, major center proposals, training and professional development opportunities, and more.
