Summer is officially here! Kick off the season with some of our newest OSDC programming. This month we're continuing our MiniSeries in Reproducible Research with the second installment in our series, Data Visualization with R, and topping it off with a new event series aimed at engaging students in the many exciting citizen science opportunities at CMU, in the community, and on the web! Join us to learn how science is for everyone! Also be sure to check out the exciting new web series, Pixel Datascapes, by the Libraries' own Hannah Gunderman, and find out what Pokémon can teach us about data management!

Our MiniSeries in Reproducible Research continues with Data Visualization with R

Last month we kicked off our new workshop MiniSeries covering the foundational skills and concepts needed to produce reproducible research. The OSDC Minis are designed to teach researchers basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with data so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain.

This month, we continue our series with Data Visualization with R! This 2-hour course based on our popular Carpentries workshops teaches students to create customized data visualizations in R. Using the ggplot2 package, students will produce plots, histograms, density distribution, and other useful visualizations to bring their data to life. Workshops are taught in a highly-interactive, hands-on format and require no prior programming experience to participate. Register now on LibCal.

Announcing our newest event series: Citizen Science Featurettes!

Ever dreamed of being an astrophysicist for a day? A biochemist? A geographer?... Now you can! Come discover the weird, wild, wonderful world of citizen science with our new Citizen Science Featurettes!

This series of short, one-off events will expose participants to the diversity of citizen science opportunities online and in the local community. Each Featurette centers on a single citizen science project and includes orientation and training in the project's methodology a hands-on 'field-test' of the project interface and workflow, and a debrief and discussion highlighting key insights, opportunities, and challenges.

For our first event, we'll introduce you to the project that started it all, Galaxy Zoo! To understand how galaxies formed, astrophysicists need your help to classify them according to their shapes. If you're quick, you may even be the first person to see the galaxies you're asked to classify!

This virtual 1.5-hour event will be held on Friday, June 18th from 1-2:30 pm ET. Register now on LibCal.

New CMU Libraries web series Pixel Datascapes highlights data management lessons in video games!

What can Pokémon teach us about data documentation and metadata? How can we learn to write better data management plans from Untitled Goose Game? Data management is a core tenet underlying open science: data that is well-organized and documented is more reproducible and allows for more transparency in data sharing! Pixel Datascapes is a brand new web series focusing on the data management lessons found in video games and is produced by Hannah Gunderman, Research Data Management Consultant at CMU Libraries. Stay tuned as more episodes are released throughout 2021!
