Records History
Margaret Morrison Carnegie College (MMCC) was founded in 1903 as one of the four colleges of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pa. The College was in existence from May 1906, with the registration of the first class, to 1973 when it completed its four-year phase out. Over its seventy years MMCC offered day and evening classes to provide students with practical, vocational training focused on the home. MMCC aimed to develop, "womanly attributes and give a foundation on which to build a career in distinctly feminine fields." The curriculums offered varied over time but included Home Economics, Costume Economics, Secretarial Studies (later known as Business Studies), General Studies, General Science (later Biological Sciences), Social Work, Nursing, and Library Work.

The phase out of MMCC began in 1969, when it was decided that freshman admissions would cease in 1969. The phase out was completed in 1973 with the graduation of the 1969 freshman class. The phase out was prompted by declining enrollment in Home Economics and Business Studies and steadily increasing enrollment in the sciences and humanities and social sciences. The end of Margaret Morrison Carnegie College also marked the beginning of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Margaret Morrison Carnegie College had seven deans over its seventy-year history: Anna Beckwith Smith (1906-1909), Clara Linforth West (1909-1912), Mary Bidwell Breed (1913-1929), Charles Watkins (1929-1947), Edith Winchester Alexander (1947-1956), Margaret LeClair (1956-1960), and Erwin R. Steinberg (1960-1973). Betty Jane Lloyd was Assistant to the Dean (1958-1963) and Assistant Dean (1963-1973). Both Steinberg and Lloyd continued their services for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Scope and Content Note
The Margaret Morrison Carnegie College Records are housed in nine archival boxes and one partial oversize box and are arranged in seven series. Series have been designated for Registrar's Records, Annual Reports, Minutes, Administration, Programs, Faculty, and Students. The records include reports, minutes, correspondence, registration cards, conference proceedings, writings, clippings, and other paper-based works.

The records are composed primarily of annual reports and various meeting minutes. There are relatively large correspondence files for some of the Deans of the College. Also featured are the writings of faculty and proceedings of conferences held on campus; present, but to a lesser extent, are the writing of students. As a whole, the records deal with the administration of the College and its programs, not with the students of the College.

There is little overlap between the seven series. The records are arranged primarily chronologically.

Series I: Registrar's Records
The Registrar's Records consist of three sub-series of registration cards. The first are 3x5 cards that cover the time period before 1957. The second sub-series is a set of 3x7 cards that covers the dates between 1957 and 1967. The third sub-series is a separate set of 3x7 cards covering 1967 to 1973. The cards are arranged alphabetically by student last name for each sub-series. The cards include the student name, address, parent information, and high school graduation date. The cards do not show the students' curriculum or courses taken. The dates provided for each sub-series are approximate.

Series II: Annual Reports
The Annual Reports run from 1908-1973. The Annual Reports for 1917-1918 and 1918-1919 are missing. For many school years there are two or three copies of the annual report. All copies may not contain copies of every page; the "copy 1" will always contain the most information. The MMCC Annual Report may consist of the annual report for the College, annual reports for each department, faculty professional activities reports, student statistics and correspondence related to that year's annual report. The Annual Reports are arranged chronologically. Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, page 3

Series III: Minutes
The Minutes series is arranged into six sub-series: Plebe Faculty (1915-1917), Training Committee (1926), Faculty (1909-1970), Curriculum Committee (1907-1949), Division of Humanistic and Social Studies Curriculum Committee (1947-1949), and College Council (1949-1967). The minutes in each sub-series are arranged chronologically and may include up to three copies. All copies may not contain copies of every page; the "copy 1" will always contain the most information. The Curriculum Committee and College Council include the same types of information, student course substitutions and probation and disciplinary information.

Series IV: Administration
The Administration series deals with the administration of the College as a whole. The Administration series has been arranged in eighteen sub-series, listed from the more general to the more specific and somewhat chronologically. The first sub-series is the MMCC Faculty Constitution (1949). The second sub-series is the Office of the Dean which includes material from four deans, Mary Watson Green (Dean of Women), Mary Bidwell Breed, Margaret F. LeClair, and Erwin R. Steinberg. This sub-series is primarily correspondence. The third sub-series is Budget. The sub-series includes budget statements covering 1962-1971 and includes breakdowns for the administration and each department. The Donation sub-series consists of donations from three individuals for a professorship, scholarship, and general use. The Facilities sub-series deals with remodeling and improvement plans from 1958-1962, the planning activities and of the Breed Memorial Committee and plans for Breed Memorial Hall, and correspondence related to a portrait of Margaret Morrison Carnegie. The tenth sub-series is the Graduate Committee minutes running from 1963-1967. Four related sub-series, Visiting Committee, Planning Committee, Long Range Planning, and Phase out, which all relate to the phase out of MMCC in 1973. The Visiting Committee sub-series is reports of the Visiting Committee from 1962-1974, which recommended in 1968 that phase out be considered. The Planning Committee sub-series includes meeting minutes for 1955-1960, and the report "The Future Development of Margaret Morrison Carnegie College" (1960). The Phase Out sub-series includes the final statement on the phase out, the position of faculty and students, and correspondence regarding the phase out. There are a number of other small sub-series in the Administration series that can be seen on the container list.

Series V: Programs
The Program series is arranged in sixteen sub-series, each relating to a program or course of study at MMCC. The sub-series are arranged somewhat chronologically and with similar programs together. The types of records in each sub-series include staff meeting reports, student notebooks, event and collection descriptions, information on tracts within a course of study, brochures, program development information. The sub-series are General Information, Household Economics, Costume Economics, Secretarial Studies, General Studies, Master of Arts for Teachers, Master of Arts- History, Social Work, General Science, Biological Science, Master of Arts in Natural Sciences, Nursing, Technical Writing, Nursery School, Early Childhood Development Program, and Education Center.

Series VI: Faculty
The Faculty series is arranged in four sub-series: Conferences, Writings, College Reprint Series and Clippings. All topics relate to women and higher education and the role of women in society and the workforce. The Conference sub-series includes the proceedings of five conferences held on campus. The Writings sub-series includes the writings of ten staff and faculty members. Sub-sub-series have been designated for each faculty member (or pairs of faculty members collaborating on a writing) and then arranged chronologically if the person has more than one writing represented. The College Reprint Series include sixteen reprints of faculty authored works.

Series VII: Students
The seventh series relates to the students. It is divided into seven sub-series. The first, Handbooks/Guides consists of handbooks for MMCC students. The next two sub-series are two histories of the Charter Class of MMCC. The fourth sub-series is student writings; they are arranged chronologically. The fifth sub-series is Activities, arranged chronologically where possible. It includes information on Camp Louise Carnegie, the Carnegie Agricultural Unit for Girls, the Follies of 1922 and Margaret Morrison Carnegie Guild. The sixth sub-series consists of a student schedule card. The seventh are clippings.

Separations
Five folders of oversize materials have been separated from the main body of records. The five folders are two architectural drawings, two class schedule layouts, and class notebook. The five folders are listed on the container list in their proper arrangement; instead of a FF (file folder) number, they have and OvSz (oversize) number designation. The Margaret Morrison Carnegie College oversize folders share an oversize box with School of Printing Management Records oversize materials.
