New Book in Special Collections: Spenser’s The Faerie Queen in a 1611 Collected Works

Edmund Spenser, 1552/1553-1599. The faerie queen; The shepheards calendar: together with the other works of England's arch-poët collected into one volume, and carefully corrected. [London] Printed by H.L. for Mathew Lownes, 1611.

Lownes had many unsold copies of his first folio edition (1609) ‘Faerie Queen.’ Instead of reprinting the epic, he compiled a collected edition using the left over sheets with a new title page and dedicatory leaf. The earliest 1611 issue of the collected works did not include the satire “Mother Hubberd’s Tale.”
