Shibboleth Pilot Project

FirstSearch provides access to information in a wide range of subjects. Search by topic, or select from 40 databases. *FirstSearch does not guarantee continuous uptime for its shibbolized databases.

JSTOR is an excellent source of journal backfiles in fulltext for many Carnegie Mellon disciplines.
The list of titles available in JSTOR continues to grow.

What is Shibboleth?
Shibboleth is a potential alternative to IP-address restriction that will improve access to e-resources. The software enables authenticated users to access site-licensed resources such as library databases from any location with one log-in.

In 2002-2003, Carnegie Mellon University Libraries worked with Computing Services, Internet2, database vendors, and other institutions to implement a pilot project using the Shibboleth client/server technology.

At Carnegie Mellon, we are testing Shibboleth with JSTOR and FirstSearch. Other institutions are testing Shibboleth with other licensed resources, and we are pooling our experiences from the ongoing beta test.

Part of the beta program has been to determine the viability of Shibboleth as a tool for libraries and also whether Internet2 and vendors can support the software.

1. What is Shibboleth and why do I need it?
2. What about privacy?
3. Can I access other resources besides FirstSearch and JSTOR?
4. Where can I find out more?

1. What is Shibboleth and why do I need it?
Shibboleth is software that enables secure controlled access to e-resources. Shibboleth is an alternative to currently-used IP address restriction. Shibboleth is more flexible than IP recognition--it recognizes authorized users rather than their computers. Shibboleth will allow authorized users to access site-licensed resources such as library databases from virtually any location. top

2. What about privacy?
Shibboleth software was designed with privacy in mind. It has been analyzed by security experts and then designed to include appropriate safeguards to make it as secure as possible. Privacy of those who help test the software will be protected. Only the Shibboleth project group will view users' feedback (bboard postings). Any use of feedback for reports, etc., will exclude identifying information. top

3. Can I access other resources besides FirstSearch and JSTOR?
No. Currently at Carnegie Mellon, these are the only "shibbolized" resources available. top

4. Where can I find out more?
Visit Internet2 > Middleware > Shibboleth Project. top
