MetaLib users: You cannot access MetaLib remotely through the WebVPN. However, MetaLib should work using the Cisco VPN Client.
Several databases do not work properly with WebVPN, especially those using lots of Java.
Examples:
- American Chemical Society (ACS) journals
- AP Photo Archive
- ARTstor
- netLibrary
In these cases, use the Cisco VPN Client instead.

Why Use the WebVPN?
|
|
Almost all electronic resources available through the University Libraries are licensed for use by current Carnegie Mellon students, faculty and staff only.
Accessing these resources is no problem if you are using a computer on the campus network or if you dial-up locally via Andrew. However, many Carnegie Mellon users are remote users, may be using wireless on-campus, or may be using their own Internet Service Provider.
To be able to access licensed resources, these users must authenticate (login with Andrew userID and password) using WebISO or connect through the WebVPN.

Further Information |
| Computing Services provides further details:
WebVPN is not required to access some online resources. WebISO automatically connects users to:
- Course reserve readings listed in Cameo
- Audio reserves listed in Cameo
- SciFinder Scholar software download*
- CTMS/MatLab
If you have a technical problem with WebVPN, contact the Computer Services Help Center.
|
|
Caveats |
|
* SciFinder Scholar users:
Download your software and upgrades (one time only) via WebISO, or borrow the software on CD from the Engineering & Science Library Reference Desk or Mellon Institute Library Office. Search the database on a regular basis using the downloadable Cisco VPN client mentioned above.
DISCONNECT! After you are finished accessing resources, remember to disconnect from the WebVPN or VPN client. If you don't, subsequent web pages will continue to run through the VPN, potentially slowing down your browser response time.

What's New |

What Happened to the old IP Address Extension Service client?
Effective July 1, 2006, this service was discontinued. The WebVPN offers a more secure connection, there is no set-up needed, and is less cumbersome to use.
