Types of Instruction
OrientationsA library orientation will help you find your way around the library buildings, services, and resources at Carnegie Mellon. Group tours and orientations for undergraduates, graduate students, and international students are offered at the beginning of every academic year and are available on request at any time to small groups or individuals. Topics include:
- How to use the library catalog and other databases (as well as print and microform resources) to locate information and do research.
- Where items are located in the library
- How to obtain the information you need, even if Carnegie Mellon doesn't own it.
- How library services can make your academic life easier.
To participate or to find out more, contact the library instruction coordinator, Jean Alexander, jeana@andrew.cmu.edu.
Specialized workshops are offered throughout the year on specific resources or topics such as the LexisNexis and ProQuest databases or the HELIOS project (an electronic archive).
If you would like to suggest that the library develop a workshop on a particular information resource, contact the liaison librarian for your department or fill out the online library instruction request form.
Faculty members and teaching assistants at Carnegie Mellon may request specialized instruction by a liaison librarian relevant to class projects. These sessions can cover a wide range of resources for general or specific subjects, can focus on one particular information tool, such as patent searching or how to use a particular index, or can emphasize concepts or research strategies. Library instruction sessions can meet in the library, or the librarian can teach in your classroom. We encourage team teaching with faculty and librarians.
Any Carnegie Mellon faculty or staff member may request course-based instruction that focuses on subject-area resources or addresses a particular research need.
To request library instruction for a particular course, contact the liaison librarian for your department or fill out the online library instruction request form.
One-on-One or Small Group InstructionAny Carnegie Mellon student, faculty, or staff member may request one-on-one or small group instruction. The instruction session will be tailored to the needs of the individual or group.
To request library instruction for yourself or a small group, contact the liaison librarian for your department or fill out the online library instruction request form.
