Grove Art Online is an illustrated, encyclopedic work containing 45,000 articles with bibliographies, written by more than 6,800 international scholars on all aspects of the visual arts from prehistory to the present day. Revised and expanded from the original 34-volume print edition (published in 1996), the online version will allow for updates and revisions.

Topics include artist biographies, patrons of the arts, art writers, civilizations, country surveys, towns and cities, styles and movements, art forms, subjects and iconography, materials techniques and conservation, theory and related issues.

Online features include advanced full-text article searching, related links to thousands of full-color images from museum, private and other collections, and hotlinked navigational aids via cross-references, tables of contents and alphabetic indexes.
