Minority Studies
Most of the following databases are licensed for Carnegie Mellon users only.
- Bibliography of Asian Studies (1971-present)
Contains citations to books, journal articles, chapters in edited volumes, conference proceedings, anthologies, and festschriften, etc. All areas of Asian studies are covered, including literature, history, economics, philosophy & religion, anthropology, etc.
- Black Studies Database (1948-1986)
Contains more than 170,000 citations that access significant and influential journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, pamphlets and reports relevant to all aspects of African American life and culture from 1948 to 1986.
- CQ Library (1983-present)
Excellent resource for nonpartisan news and analysis of public affairs. It provides full-text web access to two of Congressional Quarterly's premiere publications, the CQ Weekly and the CQ Researcher. CQ Weekly includes legislative news and analysis going back to 1983. CQ Researcher offers in-depth reports on current issues of the day, including summary, chronology, statistics, and bibliography.

- EconLit (1984- present)
Expanded version of the classified article index of the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL), which is the standard tool used for locating economics literature. EconLit provides citations and abstracts to nearly 600 economics journals and indexes other materials related to the field.
TIP: Some suggestions for search terms and phrases: discrimination, economic development, income distribution, migration, population, geographic descriptors, time allocation, labor supply, demographics, health, economic behavior, labor force, skills, occupational choice, training, education, management, corporate culture, social responsibility, technological change, segregation, welfare, poverty, minorities and races, mobility, formal and informal sectors, etc.
- ERIC (1966-present)
Contains bibliographic citations and abstracts to journal articles, research and technical reports, conference papers and proceedings, program descriptions, teaching guides, lesson plans, etc. Covers all areas and levels of education such as reading and communications skills, languages and linguistics, tests and measurement, etc.
TIP: Some suggestions for search terms: elementary/secondary/higher education, educational needs, empowerment, career development, leadership, teachers, literacy, rural education, adult education, access to education, welfare, racial discrimination, educational change, diversity, hate crime, student attitudes, minority groups.
- Ethnic NewsWatch (1991-present)
Ethnic NewsWatch (in ProQuest Direct) is a full-text collection of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. A rich collection of articles, editorials, columns, reviews, etc. provide a broad diversity of perspectives and viewpoints. Contents include African American, Arab and Middle Eastern, Asian American, European, Jewish, and Native American publications, including the Spanish-language press.
TIP: You can choose to search the database in English or Spanish. Use the basic or advanced search to search for articles. For help with search terms, check the Thesaurus.
- Index to Current Urban Documents (ICUD) (1995-present)
Guide to the reports and research that are generated by local government agencies, civic organizations, academic and research organizations, public libraries, and metropolitan and regional planning agencies in approximately 500 selected cities in the United States and Canada. The database indexes over 2,400 documents a year.
TIP: The University Libraries subscribe to the Index only. Check Cameo to determine if Hunt Library has a copy of Pennsylvania state or local documents. If not, documents may be acquired through interlibrary loan.
- LexisNexis Academic (1966-present)
Features full-text access to business, legal and general medical/health information.
This database offers continually updated news items, background information on current issues, company financial information, company and industry news, law reviews, federal case law, accounting and auditing tax information, and access to quick information through online reference resources and directories.

- Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA) (1973-present)
Provides indexing and abstracting of 1199 international journals in linguistics and language use. An important source for researchers in language teaching, linguistics, discourse studies, computer science, psychology, and more.

- MLA International Bibliography (1963-present)
Premiere reference tool for the critical study of language, literature, and folkore. It provides citations to books, book chapters, periodical articles,
and dissertations in all languages for all periods beginning with the Middle Ages.
TIP: Some suggestions for search terms: race, geography, religion, ethnicity, social status, social dialects, resistance, social class.
- PAIS International (1972-present)
Indexes articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book chapters,
and statistical directories about public affairs. Over 2100 periodicals are covered.
TIP: Some suggestions for search terms: discrimination, equality, social change, employment, poverty, civil rights.
- Philosopher’s Index (1940-present)
Covers more than 480 journals from 38 countries. It features informative author-written abstracts; complete coverage of all major articles written in English, Spanish, German, Italian and French;
and additional citations in Portuguese, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. The Philosopher's Index also covers international scholarly philosophy articles from anthologies and books written in English and other languages. Topics include the major fields of philosophy, such as aesthetics, axiology, epistemology, ethics, logic (including mathematics), metaphysics (including philosophy of mind, existentialism and phenomenology), philosophical anthropology, philosophy (including metaphilosophy), political philosophy (including philosophy of law) and social philosophy. Also covered are the philosophy of education, history, language, science and religion.

- Policy Central (1977-present)
Policy Central is the online home for these National Journal publications: National Journal, CongressDaily,
The Hotline, American Health Line, and Technology Daily. These are good sources for keeping up with a wide variety of public policy issues. Policy Central offers other sources of news and information as well. The Daybook is a fully searchable guide to political and policy events in Washington. You can create your own daybook to obtain daily e-mail updates on topics of interest. The Campaigns and Ad Spotlight features enable users to monitor races for governor, Congress, and the Presidency. Poll Track provides polling data on campaigns and important social issues. Bill Status Reports track key legislation. For tracking all federal legislation and to obtain the full-text of bills, hearings, reports, laws, and other congressional documents, use the LexisNexis Congressional database.

- ProQuest
Provides convenient search and retrieval from thousands of publications. Many articles are in full-text and image format. Search all of the ProQuest databases at once (the default), or search one or more selected databases.

For more details on searching the historical newspapers in ProQuest, please visit the History Research Guides. ProQuest databases of particular interest include: the ProQuest Research Library and specifically the Multicultural Module. Search Modules separately or a few or all of them together.
Titles covered in the Multicultural Module include many titles on ethnic minority studies. Many of these titles are available full-text online through ProQuest or one of the libraries’ other databases. - PsycINFO (1887-present)
Covers psychology and related fields and describes journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports, as well as citations to dissertations. Indexed materials are international in scope, selected from psychology and related journals published globally in over 25 languages. Subjects include psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines, such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, and law.
- ViVa (1975-present)
Current bibliography of articles about women's and gender history. Articles published in English, French, German, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish are selected from 167 European, American, Canadian, Asian, Australian and New Zealand journals. Today, the ViVa database contains bibliographic records describing more than eight thousand articles published in historical and women's studies journals.
TIP: ViVa includes citations on women in African history from AfricaBib, the largest Africana database on women in the world on the Internet. For more information about AfricaBib, visit the AfricaBib website. The AfricaBib citations in ViVa refer to articles from 1995 onwards. They are fully integrated into the ViVa database and can be searched by author, title, year of publication and journal title. AfricaBib titles cannot be searched by time period, but you can find them all by entering "afr" in the "Code" box on the Advanced search screen. AfricaBib titles are displayed separately in the African-History section on the Browse pages.
- Web of Science
Multidisciplinary database, with searchable author abstracts, covering the literature of the sciences, social sciences and the arts & humanities. Users may choose to search across all the databases, or select just one. This unique database indexes and links cited references for each article. All formats provide complete bibliographic data and additional features, such as cited reference searching, links to related articles, plus author and publisher addresses.

- Women’s Audio Visuals in English (WAVE) (1990s-present)
Maintained by the University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Librarian's Office that lists documentary, experimental, and feature film and video productions by and about women. The information has been drawn from distributors' and producers' catalogs and websites, reviews in periodicals, filmographies, reference works, and library catalogs; in most cases the Office has not examined the materials themselves. To be included in WAVE, productions must be at least ten minutes long and available for rental and/or purchase.
TIP: Try using the Subject & Keyword Search. Browse subject categories or search the entire collection by keyword. Subject categories include: race/ethnicity/culture/religion/international and work/careers/endeavors.
