Below is a list of some of the archives, libraries, and museums in Pittsburgh that are relevant to the history of Pittsburgh. - Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh A particularly valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Pittsburgh, the public libraries have many historical Pittsburgh newspapers and journals, books, census materials, and older reference works. Carnegie Mellon faculty, staff, and students can borrow materials by getting a Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh library card at the Main Library lending desk. Library Cards are free to residents of Allegheny County (bring proof of address), as well as out-of-town college students residing in the county (bring your Carnegie Mellon ID card and proof of local address).

- Meadowcroft Museum of Rural Life
A site of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania which preserves the history of life on the land in Western Pennsylvania over the past 14,000 years. The 200 acre outdoor museum includes one of the oldest archaeological sites in North America and a recreated nineteenth century village.
- Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation
- James D. Van Trump Library
Books, manuscripts, periodicals, historic site survey data, photographs and other visual documentation (slide collections and shows), maps and plat books, renderings and blueprints, and other materials pertaining to the foundation's activities, regional history, Allegheny County Historic Buildings Survey, African American History Survey, architecture, historic preservation, urban planning, engineering and technological development, interior design, and landscape design. Open to members and staff, though non-members may use the Library upon payment of a $10 fee. Students of high school level and above may use the Library at no charge (valid student identification required).
- The Pittsburgh Theological Seminary
- The Clifford E. Barbour Library
The Frank Dixon McCloy Room contains the seminary archives and historical materials directly related to the seminary's history. The library also houses materials related to the Associate, Associate Reformed, United Presbyterian, and Presbyterian (USA) congregations, synods, and general assemblies.
- Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh
- Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center
Dedicated to preserving and presenting regional history.
- Soldiers and Sailors National Military Museum and Memorial
Includes a library, primarily of Civil War books donated by veterans when the hall opened in 1910, though the library has been expanding to include volumes on other wars in which Allegheny County veterans participated. Archival records include a large collection of GAR post records, annual encampment volumes, reunion publications, original and/or copies of Civil War letters and diaries. The hall photograph collection includes thousands of images from all wars, with strengths in the Civil War and World War II. Library access is by appointment.
- University Library System, University of Pittsburgh
Consists of 14 libraries located on or near the University's campus. Carnegie Mellon faculty, staff, and students can borrow materials from most of these libraries by getting a "Special Borrower" card from the Hillman Library lending desk. Faculty and staff must show their Carnegie Mellon ID card while students must show their Carnegie Mellon ID and proof of current registration (the PAT bus sticker can serve this function).

Housed in the Pennsylvania Department of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, this non-circulating collection supports the research of general and Western Pennsylvania genealogy.

- Society for the Preservation of the Duquesne Incline
Dedicated to the restoration and rehabilitation of the cars, equipment, and the stations of the Duquesne Heights/Mount Washington inclines, and to establish the inclines as a reliable commuter facility and a popular visitor attraction. Membership information, history of the Duquesne Incline.

A gift from the Board of Public Education to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in 1989, the collection is divided into six subgroups: Office of the Board of Public Education (and predecessors), subdistrict school boards, Office of Business Affairs, Office of the Superintendent, and the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Documents include annual reports, publications, clippings, photographs, directories, maps, charts, diagrams and graphs, minute books, financial records, committee and department reports, courses of study, survey commission reports, school histories, and various school records, including enrollment, grade and attendance registers.

Search the U.S. Census Schedules for the city of Pittsburgh from the years 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 and for Allegheny City from the years 1850, 1860, and 1870. Census Schedules contain information about specific individuals.
