Proposal Writing

  • Brewer, Ernest W., Charles M. Achilles and Jay R. Fuhriman. Finding Funding: Grantwriting from Start to Finish, Including Project Management and Internet Use, third edition. Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin Press, Inc., 1998.

    The authors of this book have extensive grantwriting experience, and distill much of it into this clearly-written volume. Tips, suggestions for information sources and a sample proposal are prominent features. There is an extensive description of how to use the internet to identify funding sources and prepare grants, and the authors discuss in detail how to use federal information sources such as Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, the Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, and Education Department General Administrative Regulations. A substantial section of the book explains how applications are judged. The final section covers project management, even the nitty-gritty of grant implementation, such as how to handle site visits and reports.

    Foundation Fundamentals explains how to find the facts you need to get a grant, from who gets them to how to find foundations' funding projects in a specific field or geographic location.

  • McIlnay, Dennis P. How Foundations Work: What Grantseekers Need to Know About the Many Faces of Foundations. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Publishers, 1998.

    This publication is written for grantseekers or people who are interested or involved in non-profit management. This book analyzes the nature of foundations, particularly their social role in American culture.

  • Miner, Lynn E. and Jerry Grifith. Proposal Planning and Writing Phoenix, Ariz: Oryx Press, 1993.
    OVRSZQ-2- 658.15 M66P
    This guide provides information on finding public or private funds. It also addresses the writing and editing process for putting together foundation, government and corporate proposals. The material is geared to a diverse range of grantseekers, and includes a helpful FAQ section.

  • Ries, Joanne B. and Carl G. Leukefeld. The Research Funding Guidebook: Getting It, Managing It, & Renewing It. Thousand Oaks: Sage Publications, 1998.

    This source goes beyond providing simple guidelines for obtaining funding. The authors explain in detail steps for organizing the project, tracking expenditures, grant reviewer perceptions and budget considerations. The focus is on the behavioral and health sciences but this guidebook can be useful for anyone interested in obtaining funding.
