Lynn Berard
Principal Librarian, Science Libraries


Education and Experience

Lynn is a principal librarian in the Science Libraries. She currently serves as an engineering liaison (CivE, EPP, Environmental, MechE) and is also the editor for FOCUS, the Carnegie Mellon faculty and staff newspaper. Lynn began her career at Carnegie Mellon in 1985 as the Computer Science/Robotics Librarian, and since that time has served in various positions, including Head of the Science Libraries and as a Researcher for the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute. Throughout her tenure, she has served on numerous university-wide search committees, task forces, and councils. In addition to her duties at Carneige Mellon, she has taught classes in library science as an adjunct faculty member at Clarion University and the University of Pittsburgh. She received her graduate degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan.


Library Responsibilities

Head, Science Libraries
Responsible for the management of E&S and Mellon Institute Libraries, including all services, staffing, and facilities. Directs reference services and fosters purchasing decisions for information delivery platforms for the Carnegie Institute of Technology, the Mellon College of Science, and the School of Computing Sciences. Oversees the reference and general collection materials budget for both facilities.

Departmental Liaison – Civil and Environmental Engineering
Directs the purchasing decisions and information platforms for reference and general collection materials in civil engineering and environmental science subject fields. Conducts library instruction sessions, designs research guides to library and internet sources, and orders books and journals in support of faculty and students in the CEE department.

Research Interests
Conducts prior art patent searches for the clients of the Carnegie Mellon Innovation Transfer Center. Lynn interviews patent applicants and guides them in conducting prior art searches on his/her invention.

Currently serves as the Editor for the campus faculty and staff newspaper FOCUS. The newspaper is published in seven issues on an annual basis.
