This document is a directory of publications and web sites that provide information about the business conditions of Pittsburgh and its surrounding area. Listings for more than 150 publications here come from over 60 sources, which are mostly from city, county and state agencies, as well as some from private and non-profit organizations. Documents include reports and regional analysis, statistical data, budgets and directories. The materials listed here are those being currently (or recently) published. There was no attempt to make this a historical bibliography.
The major local, regional and state organizations are producing important information. Topics covered here are limited to those about economic development, business climate, starting a business, labor statisics, demographics, minorities' and women's businesses, and legislation and legislators.
Business researchers and librarians alike often find it difficult to gain a perspective on local publishing by various state and regional agencies. Publications appear at irregular intervals. Organizations change names, or the names of their publications. Sometimes it is unclear which agencies will provide which kind of information, or whether they will continue to collect and publish it. A coordinated means to disseminate the information can be lacking, too. This publication will be a tool for researchers to see what kinds of information is available, and for librarians as an aid in developing and maintaining their collections.
This document is
divided into four sections, publications listed by:
subject;
publishing agency;
name of publication; and
geographic focus.
The same type of information is provided in each section, and consists of the name of the publication and contact information for that agency. Many of these items are available in the local libraries. (A * indicates items in the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries). A researcher can try to locate the item in one of the local libraries, or contact the publishing organization. Keep in mind there may be fees associated with acquiring certain documents directly from the publisher. Those costs, however, are not listed here.
Although all attempts were made to be comprehensive and accurate, items may have been missed and web pages change. Please contact adele@andrew.cmu.edu to add resources or update any errors.
