Industry Analysis
Ratio books contain information about industry averages for finacial statement items. They are useful for comparing individual companies to their industry as a whole or for cross-industry comparisons.
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code system was developed by the U.S. government to classify products and services. They can be used, with varying success, to categorize business information by industry. Many of the resources listed above are arranged by SIC code. To identify the 4-digit SIC code for your industry, consult either of the first two resources listed below. A revised system, NAICS (pronounced "nakes") has been devised and is gradually being incorporated into common use. Consult either of the second two resources below for NAICS codes. To identify major SIC codes for a company, see the Company Directories section. Expect these same resources to adopt NAICS codes soon.
