Journals and Sources of Full-text Articles
- ABI/Inform
in ProQuest Direct (Carnegie Mellon users only)
ABI/Inform is the primary database for locating research articles, case
studies and related material for the field of management. It features fulltext
coverage of the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, California
Management Review, the Academy of Management Journal and Academy
of Management Review, and more. It is strong in applied management in various
fields, such as marketing, personnel, purchasing, finance and healthcare. Coverage
also includes national and international business news weekly magazines (e.g.,
The Economist and Business Week) and trade journals.
- Business
& Industry in FirstSearch (Carnegie Mellon users only)
This database points to citations, often with information-laden abstracts, that
provide information about companies and industries, trends, market share, sales,
new products and demographics.
- Business
& Management Practices
(BaMP) in FirstSearch is devoted to applied management and indexes more than
1000 journals (870 full text) that focus on business strategy and planning.
Articles come from both academic and trade journal sources include research,
case studies and industry news, as well as reports on practical applications,
best practices and quality-related topics. The coverage is international,
but the resources also include U.S. regional business news. A wide range of
industries and technology areas are covered. BaMP can be used as a first-stop
or as a supplement to other management research databases.
- General
Business File ASAP in InfoTrac (Carnegie Mellon users only)
General Business File is a competitor of ABI/Inform in that it
provides citation and full text access to articles in business and economics.
There is some overlap in journal titles between the two databases, but each
one excels at coverage of selected industries and applied management topics.
It is best to look in both databases when researching a topic. Also, if one
database does not contain the full-text of the publication, the other often
will have it.
- LexisNexis
Academic (Carnegie Mellon users only)
LexisNexis is an entirely full text database, and it is strongest in
international and U.S. business news, and U.S. legal news. Its coverage of academic
journals in management is less extensive than ABI/Inform and General
Business File, but it provides yet one more source for locating full-text
of publications (especially trade journals and news weeklies) that may not be
available full-text in the other databases. The "Reference" section also contains
a place to search for biographical information.
- Social Sciences
Citation Index in Web of Science
(Carnegie Mellon users only)
SSCI contains citations for academic journals in management. It can be searched
like any other database (by author, title, source, subject). An added function,
links to citing sources, is a powerful tool for building a literature review,
because it can identify key papers, studies and authors on a specific management
theory, and the other articles that cite them.
- Wall Street
Journal in ProQuest Direct (Carnegie Mellon users only)
The full-text of the WSJ is available back to 1984 in ABI/Inform.
The current day's issue is typically loaded and fully searchable by mid-morning.
The Historical
Wall Street Journal is also available, covering 1890-1986, in PDF format.
- WilsonSelect
in FirstSearch (Carnegie Mellon users only)
Wilson Select contains full text articles in several disciplines, including
business published in international English language journals. Wilson Select
is more limited than ABI/Inform, General Business File or LexisNexis.
It is updated weekly, and may be most useful when trying to locate full text
of less widely-read journals, which tend to get loaded somewhat more slowly
in the other competing databases.
