Image Search Engines: Technical Advisory Service for Images (University of Bristol) Oct. 2004
Reviews various image major and specialized search engines, including some of the ones listed below. Links to some stock photography collections such as Corbis, National Geographic and Time-Life.

Selected Search Engines (alphabetical order)

AltaVista Image Search (CMGI, Inc.)
Searches across the web and a selection of high resolution images provided by AltaVista "partners." Also searches for specific image formats (jpeg, gif, tiff, etc.) Displays thumbnails and higher resolution images.

The Amazing Picture Machine (North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium). Ceased operation September 30, 2005.
Links to graphic resources on the Internet and cataloged by the NCRTEC staff. Image quality varies.

Berkeley Digital Library SunSite
Searches several image sites at once including University of Berkeley, Library of Congress, NASA, Library of Virginia, and the Smithsonian.

Excite Photo Search
Search hint: Above "Search the Web" click on "Images" radio button.
For best results use their Advanced search. Both will display thumbnail and image resolution.

Google Image Search (recommended)
Once a search is performed, the user can limit results by resolution/size (above the image results, look for "Images  Showing:" and choose a size from the drop down list).

Lycos Multimedia (TerraLycos)
Searches for images and video. Use the "tabs" at the top of the search page to switch to video-only search.
