Audio Collection

The Carnegie Mellon University's Audio Collection is located in Hunt Library on the 4th floor and provides audio resources such as sound recordings and listening facilities for the use of Carnegie Mellon University staff, faculty and students.


Sound Recording Collection

The Sound Recording Collection includes a variety of musical and non-musical recordings in various formats. The collection consists of approximately 16,000 LPs, 5,500 CDs as well as small collection of audiocassettes. CDs and audiocassettes circulate to anyone with a valid CMU ID, LPs circulate to Carnegie Mellon faculty and staff only.

The Audio Collection makes available the following equipment during regular service hours.

-Headphones (Patron must present a valid CMU ID)

-1 self-serve audiocassette player
-1 self serve combination CD/audiocassette player
-5 mediated LP play back stations

Digital Audio Collections

Classical Music Library (Carnegie Mellon users only)
A growing collection of recordings with a supplementary reference database, enabling patrons to listen to music both on campus or at home (by accessing the service via the library's secure system remotely) while simultaneously searching and browsing the Classical reference database. Content partners include Hyperion, Vox, Vanguard, Arabesque, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sanctuary and many other respected labels.

Features: Contains 20,000+ fully licensed recordings, increasing at a rate of 2,000 per month; thousands of program notes and composer biographies; advanced searching;hundreds of recommended playlists themed by categories.

Note: Flash Player 6 is required for all systems (Mac and PC). The library currently has a 3-simultaneous user license to this product.

Naxos Music Library (Carnegie Mellon users only)
Naxos Music Library is a comprehensive collection of classical music available online. It includes the complete Naxos, Marco Polo and Dacapo catalogues of over 140,000 tracks, including Classical music, Jazz, World, Folk, New Age, and Chinese music. While listening, you can read notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database. All these are accessible from computers in the University Libraries, home (via VPN) or office.

Naxos Fantasy Jazz (Carnegie Mellon users only)
Gives subscribers access to over 20,000 tracks from the world renowned artists and collections of Fantasy Records. Fantasy Records (and its subsidiary Galaxy) were established in San Francisco in 1949 by Max and Sol Weiss. Over the years, Fantasy acquired other recording companies, including: Prestige (also including its subsidiaries New Jazz, Bluesville, Folklore, Swingville, Tru-Sound, and Moodsville), Riverside, Milestone, Stax Records (and affiliated labels Volt, Enterprise, and Gospel Truth), Contemporary/Good Time Jazz, Specialty, Takoma, and Kicking Mule.

Equipment Rental and Services
The Libraries do not provide equipment for recording or instructional use. Equipment as well as technical assistance may be obtained through Instructional Technology which is located in Cyert Hall, room 119.

Check out our royalty free Studio Cutz CD collection for your next class project. Each CD covers a unique theme, with titles such as "Acoustic Brew" and "Silly Stuff" with 60 second edits, 30 second edits, and short edits (or stingers) of each song.
