Getting started with Cameo

Cameo is Carnegie Mellon's library catalog. There are a number of different ways to look up information, so it's important to try different search methods in order to find more references to the material you're searching for.

  • Simple search: the default search method on the main screen of Cameo.

  • Complex search: Access this by clicking the complex search tab on the right side of the screen. Allows you to limit your search by filling in such factors as material type, author, publisher, or date.

  • Truncation: Truncating words by using the $ sign is useful when there are different spellings or if you are not sure how something is spelled. For example, searching for quinte$ will find quintet, quintett, quintette, and quintetto, as well as plural forms.

  • And, or, not: Using boolean functions such as and, or, and not will help to broaden or narrow your search. For instance, searching for woodwind quintet will not generate as many relevant search results as woodwind and quintet. A search for Reicha not quintet$ will find any Reicha that is not a quintet.

Subject headings

Subject headings are useful if you wish to browse a specific category. Type an instrument Typing quintet and clicking the browse option in the simple search will show you a number of quintet-related categories.
