A must for composers, it outlines instrument ranges and techniques with an accompanying CD for aural examples.

Bajura, Keith. Finale for Composers.
An intermediate to advanced guide for getting Finale to do just what you want it to do. Everything from contemporary notation to the creation of professional looking scores and parts.

Blatter, Alfred. Instrumentation and Orchestration.
A good compliment to the Adler since it addresses similar subjects but it includes voice where the Adler does not and has more of an eye toward modern techniques.

An incredibly comprehensive book that incorporates all aspects of the Adler and Blatter with some additional material.

Contains in depth chapters on how to score for sections of the orchestra and then the orchestra as a whole. The accompanying CD is very helpful for listening to the examples that are given.

Battisti, Frank L. The Winds of Change: the Evolution of the Contemporary American Wind Band/Ensemble and its Conductor.
Good for historical information including a discography.

Renshaw, Jeffrey H. The American Wind Symphony Commissioning Project: a Descriptive Catalog of Published Editions.
The American Waterways Wind Orchestra headed by Robert Boudreau commissioned and premiered over 350 new works over the course of 34 years. This book gives the instrumentation, composer info., publisher info., compositional characteristics, and a photocopy of the first page of 159 of those works.
