Historic American Buildings Survey /
Historic American Engineering Record

The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) are federal programs to record historic American architecture and engineering sites. HABS/HAER records can be accessed in a number of ways, as listed below.

  A digital archive of HABS/HAER records including measured drawings, photographs, and text.

• HABS/HAER: Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record
  HABS/HAER's own website. Includes a searchable database of recorded sites.

• America Preserved: A Checklist of Historic Buildings, Structures, and Sites Recorded by The Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record. Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, Cataloging Distribution Service, 1995.

  Reels of microfilm contain HABS measured drawings acquired by the Library of Congress before approximately 1974. All fifty states are included.

• Historic American Buildings Survey

  Microfiche of HABS photographs and data pages acquired by the Library of Congress before 1980. Largely complementary with the above collection of measure drawings. All fifty states are included.

• Historic American Buildings Survey: Part II, Pennsylvania
  HUNT MFILM-3 720.288 H6732h Supp.
  Microfiche of HABS measured drawings, photographs and data pages acquired by the Library of Congress between 1980 and 1988. Pennsylvania only. Indexed on the last few sheets (#223-230) of the michofiche.

• Carnegie Mellon University Architecture Archives: Collections Database
  The Architecture Archives includes blueprints of measured drawings for selected HABS sites. To find these, search "habs" in the record group field.

• Library of Congress: Prints and Photographs Division
  The bulk of the original HABS/HAER documentation is held by the Library of Congress. Contact the Prints and Phototgraphs Division for reproductions or for more information.
