In 1968, Carnegie Tech created a school of public policy designed to address
modern urban and social issues. The School of Urban and Public Affairs (SUPA)
was established with a $10 million grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation.
Renamed in 1991, the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management
has become one of the top public policy schools in the nation. The University
Archives contains collections pertaining to the evolution of the school, as
well as the papers of the late Senator H. John Heinz III (1938-1991). The papers
of Senator Heinz are invaluable in the study of public policy, particularly
in the areas of the environment, international finance, and senior citizens.

Carnegie Mellon University Libraries provide electronic access to portions of
the congressional papers from the late U.S. Senator John Heinz (R-PA). Named
in the senator's memory, the Heinz Electronic Library Interactive Online System
(HELIOS) allows researchers to search, browse, view and print nearly 800,000
digital images from the Senator H. John Heinz III Archives. HELIOS supports
conventional access to archival materials, and adds powerful new functions for
searching and retrieving documents.
