The Carnegie Mellon University Archives is the repository for official University records. These records are both administrative and departmental. Official University Records date back to the actual incorporation of Carnegie Technical Schools in 1900, and continue through to the current day. By preserving the records of day to day work of the University, the Archives preserves the institutional memory of CMU.

Architecture Department
4.5 linear feet of papers, publications, student work, and exhibits (1905-1990).

Athletics
2 linear feet of papers, 1910-99.
The collection contains information on intercollegiate sports at Carnegie Mellon, particularly basketball and
football.

Board of Trustees
7.5 linear feet of papers pertaining to the Board's various activities, 1901-2005 (bulk 1962-1975). From 1903-1959 the Trustees of the University were a subcommittee of the Carnegie Institute Board of Trustees, which included the Carnegie Museum and Public Library as well. In 1959, the Court of Common Pleas granted the Carnegie Institute of Technology a completely separate Board of Trustees. In this collection, the activities of the Board of Trustees are documented through the work of its committees. Therefore the majority of this collection consists of meeting minutes, reports, and correspondence. A set of Executive Committee Minutes from 1903 to 2000 is bound and stored in the University Archives as well. (The minutes of this Board are restricted for 50 years from the date of their creation.)

Consortium for Computing in Undergraduate Education (C-CUE)
1 linear foot of papers pertaining to Carnegie Mellon's agreement with other local colleges to share computing resources, 1984-1989.

Carnegie Mellon Action Project (C-MAP), Upward Bound, SCOPP
3 linear feet of papers, 1963-1995.
The School College Orientation Program in Pittsburgh (SCOPP) began as a joint program between the university and the Pittsburgh Public Schools to help academically and economically disadvantaged students prepare for college. SCOPP merged with its national counterpart, Upward Bound, in 1966. C-MAP began in 1968 to address problems facing ethnically diverse students at the college level.

Papers from the Mellon Institute for Industrial Research document the research
fellowships and administrative functions of the institute. (offsite storage)

Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT)
24 linear feet of papers, 1924-2004.
This collection includes information from the Dean's Office and the departments of Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Commercial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering & Public Policy, Engineering Design Research Center, Metallurgy & Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Science & Engineering, and Robotics.

College of Engineering and Science (E&S)
15.5 linear feet of papers, 1901-1987.
The papers include annual reports, Curriculum Committee minutes, and information from the departments of Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Management Engineering, and Physics. The college split during the merger with Mellon Institute in 1967 to become the Mellon College of Science (Sciences) and the Carnegie Institute of Technology (Engineering). This collection includes materials on the College of Industries.

College of Fine Arts (CFA)
45 linear feet of papers, 1905-99.
This collection includes records from the Dean's Office and the Architecture, Art, Design, Drama, and Music departments.

College of Humanities and Social Science (H&SS)
33 linear feet of papers, 1913-99.
The records pertain to the Dean's Office and the departments of Economics, English, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Psychology, Social Science, and Statistics.

Commission on the Status and Needs of Women at Carnegie Mellon University
1.5 linear feet of papers, 1971-95.

Executive Board
2 linear feet (1921-1966) of papers primarily comprised of meeting minutes and committee papers. Members of the Executive Board were the University President (Chairman), the Dean of each academic program, the chairman of the General Faculty Council, the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women, and other top administrative officials such as the Registrar. The Board had the responsibility to publicize and enforce school policies through communication with other campus organizations. The Board had several committees for studying a topic and making recommendations. A set of Executive Board Minutes from 1909 to 1964 is bound and stored in the University Archives as well.

9 linear feet of papers primarily comprised of meeting minutes, 1919-90.

Fraternities, Sororities, Honoraries, etc.
2 linear feet of documents that pertain to general fraternity policy and to the individual campus organizations, 1912-88.

Graduate School of Industrial Administration (GSIA)
12 linear feet of papers including theses, annual reports and publications, 1947-2000. In 2004, GSIA became The Tepper School of Business.

H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management
3 linear feet of papers including papers of Dean Kamlet, theses, student projects, and publications, 1968-2004. This college was formerly known as the School of Urban and Public Affairs (SUPA).

INSTEP
43 linear feet of papers relating to the Hindustan Steel Training Project, 1957-72.

Mellon College of Science
2 linear feet of papers, 1969-91.
This collection consists of annual reports and Chemistry reprints.

Margaret Morrison Carnegie College
7 linear feet of papers, 1908-73.
This information pertains to the Dean's Office as well as to individual departments. This college closed in 1971.

Nuclear Research Center Collection
1 linear foot of papers (1946-1957).

Office of the President
103 linear feet of papers, (84 processed), 1900-99.
Presidential papers are restricted for 20 years.

Physical Plant
7 linear feet of papers, 1904-94.
These papers relate to campus building projects and other activities.

Registrar
7.5 linear feet of papers, 1905-2002 (bulk 1925-1970). This collection contains annual reports, final examination schedules, honor rolls, Official Registration books, registration statistics, and schedules of classes. These records are mostly student statistics and lists produced by the Office but also include correspondence, articles, booklets, and sample forms.

3 linear feet of papers including those from the Nuclear Research Center (1947-61) and the Transportation Research Institute (Data Storage Systems Center), 1966-90.

Includes annual reports, Beaux Arts Ball, and Drama department information. The school changed its name to College of Fine Arts in 1921.

Scotch 'n' Soda Collection
6 linear feet of papers, audio, and visual recordings, about the student organizations' performances (1907-1999), including Pippin, Pippin. This collection contains administrative records of the club, scripts, playbills, posters, and photographs.

University Libraries
30.5 linear feet of papers, c1918-2001 (bulk 1980-1998).
These records include annual reports, correspondence, minutes, reports, articles, and publications pertaining mainly to the University Libraries but inclusive also of the Carnegie Library School and various issues of Library Automation (including ILS, LIS, and Project Mercury). The three major series in the collection are administrative records, automation projects, and Directors’ files. Areas of lesser documentation include faculty and staff records, publications, and service information.

Vice President for Business and Administration
22 linear feet of papers from former Vice President Edward Schatz.
These papers are currently unprocessed. Papers from Schatz's appointment as acting president in 1972 are included with former President H. Guyford Stever's papers (see Presidential Papers).

Vice President for Planning and Budgets
9 linear feet of papers from the Department of Planning, 1975-86.
Papers consist of statistical handbooks, a history of strategic planning, and other departmental papers.

Vice President for University Relations
10 linear feet of papers from the Department of Public Relations, 1910-present.
This collection includes publications, press releases and news clippings.

1 linear foot of papers and publications, 1972-79.

Women's Center
3/4 linear foot of papers, 1988-94.
