In the course of the last century, English at CMU has gone from being taught as a second language night-class for recent immigrants to being offered as both an undergraduate and a graduate level discipline. Carnegie Mellon's technical school heritage is evident in the fact that Dr. Erwin Steinberg established the first undergraduate major in technical writing in the 1950s. CMU's commitment to the arts is also evident in the English Depart- ment, whose faculty members have included such respected writers as novelist Gladys Schmidt, and poets Ann L. Hayes and Jim Daniels
