Carnegie Institute of Technology, Records , 1924-2004

Carnegie Mellon University Archives, Official University Records

Extent

Twenty-five boxes (Boxes 1-25); 24 linear feet , 1924-2004

Historical Sketch

In 1970, the Carnegie Institute of Technology completed a merge with the Mellon Institute to form Carnegie Mellon University. During this reorganization, the Carnegie Institute of Technology’s College of Engineering and Science was split into two separate departments. The Mellon College of Science covers mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, while all of the engineering courses and research are grouped under the Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT). CIT, also called the College of Engineering, is one of seven “colleges” that make up Carnegie Mellon University. CIT is made up of several departments including:

Cross-disciplinary research is an integral part of engineering education at Carnegie Mellon University. There are many research institutes and centers associated with the Carnegie Institute of Technology that provide opportunities for students and faculty to study current technology-oriented problems.

More information can be found at the College of Engineering website.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Carnegie Institute of Technology are housed in twenty-five boxes and are arranged in eleven series. Series have been designated for annual reports, College Council minutes, Deans’ subject files, faculty files, accreditation surveys, research institutes and centers, programs, Conference on Materials, publications, miscellaneous, and oversized materials. These records include reports, surveys, publications, correspondence, administrative forms, and resumes. The majority of the collection is made of annual reports and the Deans’ subject files. Due to the personal content included in the faculty files found in series three and four, these files are restricted. No student work is represented in the collection.

Series I : Annual Reports (1967-1999)

The annual reports series is housed in six boxes and is arranged chronologically. In these reports, each department gave information on student programs, research, and administration. They also contain resumes for the faculty which include information on the classes they taught each semester, their research, publications, honors, patents, and proposals. The associated research centers also submitted reports. From 1976 to 1990, the annual report also included a summary of College statistics including the number of students by class, total applicants, and the salaries of recent graduates.

Series II : College Council Minutes (1967-1978)

The College Council Minutes series is housed in one box and is arranged chronologically. The College Council made decisions and announcements about changes in curriculum, departmental planning, student requests to add/drop/modify courses, and miscellaneous administrative issues.

Series III : Deans’ Subject files (1924-2000)

The Deans’ subject file series is housed in six boxes and is arranged alphabetically. Most of the materials in this series have been kept in the original organization of Dean Herbert Toor (1965-1980) and Dean Angel Jordan (1980-1983), although some large “general” folders have been divided by the archivist for easier use. Generally, this series contains correspondence, reports, and department publications which were filed under department or research institute names. There are a small number of faculty files and search committee files which are restricted in this series. The “general” files in the beginning of this series represent materials that were unclassified or interdisciplinary in nature. Also, Dean Jordan’s general correspondence files can be found under the subseries “Jordan.”

Series IV : Faculty files (1939-2004)

NOTE: All files within this series are restricted. Access will be considered only on a case by case basis by the University Archivist and cannot be guaranteed. The faculty files are housed in four and a half boxes and are arranged alphabetically by last name. These files include resumes, administrative forms, articles, and correspondence that provide information about the hiring, salary changes, promotions, awards, and leaves of absence of the faculty. Some files include memorial or honorary materials as well. Most of the faculty represented in these files retired or left Carnegie Mellon University from 1970 to 2004. Included in this series are files for CIT Deans Anderson, Christiano, Jordan, Mullins, and Toor.

Series V : Accreditation questionnaires (1982)

The accreditation questionnaires are housed in seven folders in box nine and are arranged alphabetically by department. This series contains one College questionnaire and six department (or program) questionnaires. These documents were part of the school’s accreditation process by the American Board of Engineering and Technology. Each report includes program objectives and course requirements as well as information about faculty, laboratory facilities, student development, and department ethics and professionalism.

Series VI : Research Institutes and Centers (1963-1992)

The research institutes and centers series is housed in one box and is arranged alphabetically by the title of the center. Generally, the series is made of publications, correspondence, and reports. More information about these centers may be found in the Deans’ subject files (series three).

Series VII : Programs (1964-1996)

The programs series is housed in one box and is arranged alphabetically. Subseries have been designated for individual departments and academic programs within CIT. This series contains miscellaneous items such as newsletters, brochures, and reports. The Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science program changed names in 1992 to Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). All MSE materials have been filed under MEMS. More information about these programs can be found in the Deans’ Subject Files (series three).

Series VIII : Conference on Materials (1963-1972)

The Conference on Materials series is housed in six folders. This series contains proceedings, planning committee minutes, correspondence, and programs. These conferences were funded by the Buhl Foundation in cooperation with CIT. Each of the four conferences was held on campus.

Series IX : Publications (c1968-2003)

The publications series is housed in three boxes and is arranged in alphabetical order by title. The majority of this series is made of reference books about engineering education programs. This series also includes publications relating to CIT in general, including newsletters, directories, and promotional brochures. Publications about specific research institutes and academic programs can be found in series six or seven.

Series X : Miscellaneous (1967-2003)

The miscellaneous series is housed in one half-foot box and is arranged alphabetically.

Series XI : Oversized materials (1975-1987)

The oversized series is housed in one folder in drawer 9 of the oversized cabinet. It contains one poster for graduate studies at the Transportation Research Institute, several posters for the Engineering and Pubic Policy program, and several blueprints of Hamerschlag Hall during its renovation in 1979.

Provenance

These materials were received in several accessions. A portion of the collection was transferred from the Office of the Dean of Engineering in 1990. Another accession was part of a records survey carried out by the University Archivist in 2006.

Restrictions

All faculty files are restricted. Access will be considered only on a case by case basis by the University Archivist and cannot be guaranteed.

Separations

One folder of oversized material has been separated and stored in drawer 9 of the oversized cabinet on the second floor of Hunt Library. The contents of this folder are listed in Series eleven.
