Carnegie Mellon Libraries: Heinz Congressional Collection

Heinz Congressional Collection Guide to the Special Materials

The special materials in the Heinz Congressional Collection include over 4,000 photographs, 113 audio recordings, 262 videotapes, and over 230 pieces of memorabilia which constitute an unique record of significant proportions. Their contents reflect the range of issues, organizations and associations with which Heinz was associated during his long congressional career. They document diverse events, including speeches delivered by Heinz, interviews, committee hearings, press conferences, campaign rallies and commercials, TV and radio broadcasts, award ceremonies, public appearances and commercially produced film. Of special interest are recordings of Heinz's frequent appearance on the U.S. Capitol News Conference. These 30 minute interviews provide a record of the public issues of the time as well as the views of an articulate participant in the political debate.

Presently, the extensive photograph collection and audio recordings are open for research use. The Heinz Archives completed significant preservation activities of the audio-visual material, transfering it onto a suitable media for research use. Access to the videotapes will made available in the fall of 1999.
