Library Information Technology (LIT)

Vision

LIT will provide the information tools and technologies that library staff and users need to excel at their jobs and to pursue research, education, scholarship and artistic expression in a rapidly changing and increasingly digital world.

Mission

  • To aid the achievement of Carnegie Mellon Libraries' mission by providing hardware, software, systems and services that meet the needs and expectations of the university community and library staff.

  • To serve library staff and users by responding quickly and efficiently to their technology requirements.

  • To empower library staff and users by providing training and documentation for using systems and following procedures.

  • To maintain industry standards for Operations and develop industry standards for R&D.

  • To be the center of electronic publishing and digital library initiatives at Carnegie Mellon by conducting leading-edge research and development.

  • To form partnerships and work collaboratively with others on and off campus to develop a robust, state-of-the-art digital library with full technical support and sound financial support.

  • To contribute to the body of knowledge concerning the development, installation and maintenance of information tools and technologies, and the use of electronic resources.

Values

  • Leadership in developing new models of information usage and service, building on the best features of existing traditions.

  • Teamwork within the library and with others on and off campus to solve problems and pursue opportunities.

  • Respect for others, regardless of their level of technical sophistication.

  • Quality service and continuous improvement to meet the needs and expectations of library staff and users.

Goals

Operations

  • Provide technical assistance to Circulation in ramping up a full-scale electronics reserves project. Measurement: Number of courses with reserve materials available electronically, the percentage of courses that have electronic reserve or number of items on electronic reserve. (To be coordinated with Circulation.)

  • Implement some suggestions or comments from the annual LIT Operations survey. Measurement: Weight the tasks according to level of difficulty (time entailed) and assess number and weight of tasks completed.

  • Attempt to shorten the length of time it takes to deploy the annual cycle of PC replacements. Research new technologies to expedite the process. Measurement: Number of PCs deployed per month, beginning with baseline figure from Phase I.

Research and Development

  • Complete the Automated Reference Assistant (ARA) prototype. Measurement: Software released to campus; usage statistics; user and librarian satisfaction surveys; number of publications about the ARA; amount of additional funding received. If additional funding is received, other measures include patents and/or technology transfer.

  • Complete the Digital Information Versatile Archive (DIVA). Measurement: HELIOS successfully migrated from Claritech to DIVA; software released to campus; usage statistics; user and librarian satisfaction surveys; number of items archived in DIVA; number of different media or types of materials archived in DIVA (e.g., archival documents, technical reports, photographs, video); number of publications about DIVA; amount of additional funding received to enhance or exploit DIVA; technology transfer.

  • Assist with the improvement and maintenance of the Libraries' web presence. Measurement: User and librarian satisfaction surveys; usage statistics; number of digital resources and services available.
