Humanities Librarian
Carnegie Mellon is an internationally recognized institution with a distinctive mix of educational and research programs in computer science, robotics, engineering , the sciences, business, public policy, social sciences, fine arts and the humanities. More than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students at the university receive an education characterized by interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
Carnegie Mellon University Libraries seek an enthusiastic and innovative Humanities Librarian to serve as liaison to the Departments of English and Philosophy and to interdisciplinary programs in minority and gender studies. Liaison librarians at Carnegie Mellon are responsible for collections, specialized reference services, instruction and outreach to faculty and students in their assigned subject areas. The Humanities Librarian is also charged with developing the information literacy component of Interpretation & Argument, a general education course required for most Carnegie Mellon undergraduates, working closely with other instructional programs for freshmen. This position also coordinates library outreach to new international students at Carnegie Mellon.
As a member of the Hunt Reference team, the Humanities Librarian provides reference services in the humanities, social sciences and business, with rotating desk and digital reference duties, including some evening and weekend times. Participates in continuing efforts to apply new technologies and service models to reference and instruction.
This position is part of the Librarian/Archivist track of the university faculty. Attainment of promotion and continuing appointment is dependent on job performance, research, scholarly or artistic activity, and service. Initial appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and professional achievement.
Required Qualifications:
- ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized international equivalent
- Demonstrated knowledge of print and electronic resources and information technologies in the humanities
- One or more years academic library reference experience in the humanities
- Knowledge of principles and practice of information literacy
- Familiarity with tools for digital reference and instruction
- Strong public service orientation
- Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

Desirable Qualifications:
- Degree in English, Philosophy, or related subject area
- Teaching experience in an academic library setting
- Experience coordinating an instructional program in an academic library setting
